CERT Refresher : Medical Treatment with EMT’s assisting -Focus on splinting 8-27-2019
Complicated splinting of shoulder dislocation. Improvising with available materials will be necessary under disaster conditions.
When attempting splinting that may be a challenge, it may be best to practice on an uninjured person. You don’t want to do it twice on someone who is already in pain.
This shoulder dislocation is from the back, thus the patient will not be able to lower the arm. Spinting the hand to the head stabilizes the joint.
Upper arm injury. Always splint the joint above and below the injury. Here, we demonstrate using the body as part of the splint to stabilize the injury. Remember to check PMS (Pulse, Motor and Sensory) before and after splinting. Check pulse with capillary fill rate. Motor means to check movement or mobility. Sensory is to check for feeling or lack of.
We learned SAM splints are useful and need to be included in WWN CERT supplies as well as plenty of triangular bandages, gauze and duct tape.
